Saint Mary`s Parish Church, Cheadle. A History. The Manor of Cheadle "There were three townships in Cheadle: Cheadle Moseley, Cheadle Bulkeley and Handforth- cum-Bosden. Cheadle Moseley and Cheadle Bulkeley became the civil parish of Cheadle in 1879 and were created a local government district with Gatley in 1886 which lasted until 1974. An early record of the manor occurs in 1294 at the death of Geoffrey de Chedle, but the male line died out in one generation. The manor was divided in 1326 between Geoffrey de Chedle`s two grand-daughters Clemence and Agnes, who were then of age. Cheadle Moseley (Cheadle Hulme) Clemence the elder grand-daughter was married to William de Baguley. Although she inherited the more valuable part of the manor that did not include the advowson which was the right to appoint the priest to the church. Clemence`s own grand-daughter married as her second husband Sir John Savage. The Savage Chapel was built at the wishes of the Sir John Savage of six generations later, and |
